The Kona Glassbottom Boat is hiring a full-time captain position. The schedule is currently Sunday through Wednesday and additional days when cruise ships are in town. The 2027 schedule can be adjusted to better fit the captain’s preference.
The Kona Glassbottom Boat is a family run business that has been operating in Kailua-Kona Bay since 1996. Our primary tours are one-hour reef tours, we do multiple tours per day. We also offer private charters. These include, but are not limited to, ash scatterings, sunset tours, and private reef tours.
We offer competitive wages, bonuses, 3% IRA matching, and paid time off. As a full-time captain you would qualify for our medical insurance that includes dental, vision, chiropractic, massage and acupuncture.
Qualifications:
• Valid USCG Master Captain’s License and Medical Card
• Marine Radio Operator Permit
• Prior experience as a Captain in Hawaii
• Familiar with local sea and weather conditions
• Comfortable operating a vessel close to shore
• Friendly with a good attitude
• Reliable and safety orientated
• Agile and capable of lifting up to 50 lbs
• Must pass pre-employment and random drug screenings
• Must be available to work on days outside the normal schedule when cruise ships are in town.

Job Description
Are you fascinated with the coral reef and Hawaiian History? Is your ideal work environment out on the water interacting with people who are looking to have fun? If so, this might be your ideal job!
Our narrators are fun, entertaining, and knowledgeable people who inform our guests about almost everything under the sun, (and sea). The narration topics consist of Hawaii’s marine life, culture, and history. The primary subject is Kona’s coral reef ecology. Also discussed is the history of Kailua Bay, geology of the Hawaiian Islands, Hawaii’s marine mammals and other marine creatures. Some terrestrial ecology/biology and fun facts are discussed as applicable to the group’s interest.
In addition to the Reef Tours, we also offer Private Charters, Ash Scatterings, and Sunset Tours. These tours are sometimes outside the established weekly schedule, and if so, would be scheduled on a case-by-case bases.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Education in Hawaii’s Marine life either formal or informal
- Experience with public speaking
- Able to perform basic tasks of boat crew i.e., handling the lines and assisting captain.
- Friendly, with a good attitude and sense of humor
- Reliable, dependable and safety orientated.
- Must pass pre-employment and random drug screenings.
Ideal Qualifications:
- Experience in tourism industry.
- Degree in Marine Science, Environmental Science, Hawaiian History/studies or other related discipline.
- Education in Hawaiian History and Culture either formal or informal.
